Melbourne: The Most Liveable City with a Purpose

If you are travelling to Australia you are in for a great adventure. The world’s smallest continent and the largest island are considered to be the land of dreams. As exotic as it is, you won’t be bored even for a second during your holiday stay. And one of the cities you must visit is Australia’s second-largest metropolis – Melbourne. Nowadays, Melbourne tops the list of the most liveable cities in the world and its history and culture as well as its sports spirit make it a top tourist destination. So, here is what you should check out while in Melbourne.

Royal Botanic Gardens

You can’t find a more relaxing place in the whole of Australia than this one. The Royal Botanic Gardens are located south of the Yarra River and they are just about 2 km away from the Central Business District. They cover an area if 38 hectares and there are more than 8,500 species of plants. What’s even more wonderful is that you will find here many rare specimens that exist nowhere else. You can book the Aboriginal Heritage Walk tour and learn about the heritage of the indigenous Australians or simply visit the garden to enjoy in the luscious greenery. Summer is the perfect season to visit Melbourne Gardens as there is a live theatre and a moonlight cinema set up under the stars. You can also go on a picnic there and enjoy a fun-filled day.

The Edge

The Edge or the Eureka Tower is Melbourne’s highest skyscraper. It has 91 floors above the ground and offers exquisite views of the whole city. It has a gold crown and gold plated windows that make it sparkle every time the sun shines upon it. You can only get to the 88th floor – the Skydeck – which is the highest public view in any building in the Southern Hemisphere.  It is one of the Melbourne attractions you mustn’t miss.

Federation Square

This both loved and hated place is one of the best places to visit in Melbourne. Indeed, when the Federation Square opened in 2002, the people of Melbourne were divided: so loved it, others hated it. Nevertheless, it became an integral part of the city and an excellent spot for sightseeing. It has ultra-modern design and both open and closed spaces give a striking contrast to the Victorian architecture. The Federation Square is a host to more than 2000 events every year, so regardless of the season you are visiting Melbourne, you will certainly find some interesting event to check out.

Melbourne Cricket Ground

If you try to think of Melbourne and sports together you will surely come up with lots of ideas. That is because Melbourne is the sports capital of Australia and the Cricket Ground is one of the top things to see in Melbourne. It has a capacity of 100,000 and it was the main stadium for the 1956 Olympic Games as well as the 2006 Commonwealth Games. There are everyday tours you can book which will take you on a 75-minute trip down the memory lane of sports history. What is more, the Melbourne Park is just opposite the Melbourne Cricket Ground and it is the home of the Australian Open tennis tournament that takes place every January.

Melbourne Zoo

If you love animals and want to see how they are treated the best way possible in one of the world’s best state-of-art enclosures, then you have to visit the Melbourne Zoo. It is spread across 22-hectares and it has more than 320 species of animals. One of the most popular things to do there is to go on the Trail of the Elephants tour which is an insight into the lives of the Asian elephants living there. Or, you can visit the Orang-utan Sanctuary where animals live in treetop homes. An incredible and complete experience is what the Melbourne Zoo offers to the animal lovers making their holidays in Melbourne an unforgettable memory.
